Destination: Thomasville, Georgia for the Deep South Reliability Tour jointly sponsored every two years by the Horseless Carriage Club of America and the Antique Automobile Club of America.  The 2010 event was organized by Steve and Blanche Gordon with help from their Pecan Region committee.

The Reliability Tour is meant to recapture the thrill of the first reliability runs in the early 1900’s, which set out to prove that the cars were sturdy and capable of being driven for many miles. Unlike the earlier auto pioneers, our Deep South tour had few hills, excellent paved roads, and clearly written directions.

Our daily tours included two car collections, a boat ride at Wakulla Springs State Park, a visit to Greenville (the childhood home of Ray Charles) and a stop to see a cotton ginning process in operation.

The Tallahassee Antique Car Museum has a huge collection of cars, motorcycles, and automobilia as well as many additional collections unrelated to vehicles.  It’s a paradise for anyone interested in antiques.

A sudden thunderstorm roared through the town of Cairo, GA, during our stop to see the car collection and have lunch indoors.  It may have dampened our open cars but not our spirits.  A few motorists did get drenched on the way there.  We learned that Cairo is pronounced like the syrup, KAY-ro.

It was an enjoyable tour with lots of southern food dishes and lots of famous southern hospitality.  Thanks to the all who participated and to all who planned the event.
